PGE – Portland, Oregon

Nearly 2.5 million people call the Portland metropolitan area home thanks to the city’s unique culture. Portland is renowned as an eclectic mix of eco-friendliness, individualism, coffee shops and endless amounts of beer—thanks to the city’s record of having the most breweries of any city in the world. What makes the Rose City’s metro area unique is its embodiment of what makes the Pacific Northwest such a bastion of natural wonder—with only a short drive, residents can experience the outdoors along Mt. Hood, kayak the Willamette River, float along the Punchbowl Falls, and many other activities. It’s no wonder that Portland and its surrounding areas are experiencing a rapid growth in economy and population, as the city blends both the pros of urban living and the benefits of accessing a myriad of adventure in nature.

Serving 885,000 customers in 51 Oregon cities for more than 125 years is PGE (Portland General Electric). As a fully integrated energy company based in Portland, Oregon, PGE has been delivering to Oregonians with an emphasis on clean and sustainable energy.
Some of these clean energy initiatives include projects such as PGE’s first wind farm in Biglow Canyon Wind Farm (in Sherman County, OR). This facility has a total installed capacity of 450 megawatts (MW). Because of the variability of wind power, the plant produces an average of 150 MW—which can power an average of 125,000 residential customers. A second facility, the Tucannon River Wind Farm (Dayton, WA) is PGE’s second fully-owned and operated wind farm capable of producing 101 megawatts (MW). Because of these efforts, PGE has achieved national recognition from consumers and the U.S. Department of Energy.

To accelerate the efforts of power companies, joining the Arcadia Power network enables you to include more renewable and sustainable energy sources into the energy mix every time you pay your PGE bill.

According to data compiled by the United States Energy Information Administration, Oregon has an interesting energy mix not found in other U.S. states. First, renewable energy makes up a large component of the state’s energy mix. Due to large open spaces and high winds, Oregon wind farms are able to generate 3,200 megawatts (MW) of installed generating capacity from nearly 1,900 wind turbines. Similarly, the abundance of waterways has made Oregon one of the top 3 hydroelectric producers in the U.S., accounting for more than 12% of hydroelectric generation in 2017 across the country and 76% of the state’s own electricity generation. Furthermore, the state has taken the initiative to offset carbon emissions by providing 600 electric vehicle charging station across Oregon, with a total of about 1,400 charging outlets in use.
