Atlantic City Electric - Serving New Jersey Residents

Atlantic City, NJ, the model for the popular real estate board game, Monopoly, gave America its first ‘boardwalk’ in 1870 and began The Miss America Pageant in 1921. The NJ shore resort located on a 10-mile long island known as Absecon Island in Atlantic County, is just a one hour drive from Philadelphia and a two hour drive from New York City. The community of 39,000 residents has a median age of 36 years old.

After World War II, when many Americans could travel long distances more easily due to development of planes and cars, Atlantic City as a tourist attraction had hit a slump. A 1976 NJ referendum brought about legalized casino gambling and the building of many large hotel resorts and casinos on the famed 60-foot wide, 4-mile long Atlantic City boardwalk.  This brought new life to the city in the 1980s and 1990s with more than 27 million visitors annually ‘trying their luck’ at quick riches.

Attractions in Atlantic City include:

  • The Boardwalk: A noteworthy attraction is the Entrance To The Stars, showing the handprints of celebrities – similar to Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame.
  • The Steel Pier: First built in 1898 and re-built in 1993. Do not miss the 227-foot Ferris wheel that holds 240 persons in temperature-controlled gondolas.
  • Absecon Lighthouse: A maritime museum in a 228-step, 171 foot tall lighthouse; it was built in 1871 and stands as the third tallest lighthouse in the U.S.
  • Boardwalk Hall: An Atlantic City landmark, dating back to 1929, where the Miss America Pageant, an Atlantic City tradition, takes place and where visitors will find the world’s largest pipe organ containing 33,000 pipes, 8 chambers, and 1,000 stop keys.
  • Gardner’s Basin: A maritime village where you can take a fishing or dolphin cruise, shop at Crafter’s Village, and fine dine overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Gardner’s Basin is also home to the Atlantic City Aquarium.
  • Atlantic City Historical Museum: Discover Atlantic City’s wealth of history that goes beyond the temporary monetary gains found in the casinos.
