As the state capital of Iowa, Des Moines is an important area of commerce, serving vital industries such as insurance, finance, and healthcare. Records speak of the word ‘Des Moines’ as a Native American word ‘moingona’, with a meaning that historians have never accurately determined. However, the term Des Moines, of French origin, means ‘of the monks’ with historians concluding the name was derived from Trappist Monks (Moines de la Trappe) that made area along the mouth of the Des Moines River their home.

U.S. News and World Report has ranked Des Moines as offering the best value for its low cost of living, cultural attractions, and a strong economy. The Des Moines International Airport is a 15-minute drive to downtown Des Moines with its population of approximately 212,000 residents with median age of 35 years of age, earning a median income of $49,000 dollars annually.
