The Northwestern part of Florida, surrounding the Gulf of Mexico, is world-renowned for its unique culture and endless opportunities for recreation that can’t be found anywhere else in the United States. Whether you’re visiting the pristine beaches that makes Panama City a popular Spring-break destination (27 miles of sandy beach), Pensacola’s aeronautical culture (watch the Blue Angels fly overhead from mid-March to mid-November), Apalachicola’s fresh and abundant oyster culture, or gazing into the “Look and Tremble Falls” at the Chipola River Canoe Trail, northwestern Florida offers a wide variety of activities for residents and visitors alike.
Serving more than 460,000 customers throughout Northwest Florida is Gulf Power. Gulf Power has a long history of working to provide environmentally responsible electricity to its customers, with the company’s efforts to incorporate sustainable sources into its energy mix. This includes wind energy powering more than 130,000 homes and solar energy programs to reduce the impact to the environment. Gulf Power has also invested in energy storage systems to make their system more efficient, ensuring that overall consumption is reduced.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, which collects state-specific data, Florida has a number of interesting facts concerning the state’s energy mix and consumption. First, thanks in large part to Florida’s year-round sunshine and energy efforts, the state is only 1 of 4 U.S. states with utility-scale electricity generation from solar thermal technology. And of these 4 states, Florida is the only participating state east of the Rocky Mountains. Furthermore, Florida accounts for almost 8% of the U.S.’s biomass-fueled electricity generation (more total energy produced than any other state except California).
As far as the state’s energy mix, it has been evolving towards clean energy, even though the state is usually 3rd in the nation for electricity consumption (see below), behind California and Texas. As of 2017, natural gas fueled more than 2/3rd’s of Florida’s net electricity generation. However, Florida was 2nd only to Texas in 2017 in net electricity generation.
