Duke Energy Florida

Few states can boast the year-round weather and all-around opportunities for quality of life that Florida offers. From endless beaches to the state’s 175 state parks, Florida offers endless activities for outdoors enthusiasts and those who appreciate the various cultures that comprise this state. Florida is a cultural hub, with Miami’s beaches and leisure contrasting the state’s many acclaimed universities. It’s for these reasons and many more that 20 million people call this state home.

Serving the energy needs of 1.8 million customers in Florida is Duke Energy Florida. Duke Energy Florida has followed through on a number of initiatives to incorporate clean and sustainable energy into its energy mix. The company plans to:

  • invest an estimated $1 billion to construct or acquire a total of 700 megawatts (MW) of cost-effective solar power facilities over the next four years (this accelerates the company’s previous 10-year solar installation plan).
  • start construction of its 6th solar power plant, The Hamilton Solar Plant, to be located in Hamilton County, Florida as of 2018. The solar plant will be equipped with almost 300,000 solar panels and will be built on nearly 550 acres of land in Jasper, FL, producing 74.9 MW of clean, emissions-free energy—enough to power more than 20,000 homes at peak production.
  • provide more than 500 electric-vehicle charging-stations throughout Florida, along with the infrastructure with grid communications as part of a 5-year pilot program.

In a similar fashion, Duke Energy Florida is planning a modernization of the electric grid, investing $1.2 billion in a modernized power grid that will provide a more reliable and secure system throughout Florida. It’s these efforts that will support the growth of renewable energy and emerging technologies in Florida.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, which collects state-specific data, Florida has a number of interesting facts concerning the state’s energy mix and consumption:

  • Thanks to Florida’s year-round sunshine, the state is 1 of only 4 states with utility-scale electricity generation from solar thermal technology. Of these four states, Florida is the only one east of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Florida was 2nd only to Texas in 2017 in net electricity generation.
  • Florida is usually 3rd in the nation in electricity consumption, behind Texas and California.
  • Florida accounts for nearly 8% of the nation’s biomass-fueled electricity generation, which is more total energy produced than any other state except California.
  • As of 2017, natural gas fueled more than 2/3rd’s of Florida’s net electricity generation.
