How it Works

How does this work?

Arcadia Power gives customers across the country a simple way to use clean energy.

The power infrastructure makes it impossible to track electrons from a particular source to your home. Energy simply goes into the grid, mixes with other electrons, and your local utility delivers it over the poles and wires. Your local utility can’t even tell you where the electrons powering your computer originated.

With Arcadia Power, you have a choice to ensure you’re using clean energy. We do this by buying Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from wind farms to match your exact monthly usage. This certifies that that when energy that you consume at home is matched with RECs, you are using clean, wind energy.

Am I switching utilities?

No. Your local utility company will still distribute energy to your home or business through their system of poles and wires, and will help you in case the power goes out. Arcadia Power will buy Renewable Energy Certificates to match your usage according to the plan you select.

How much does this cost?

Our Free plan is free.

Our Premium and Evergreens plan cost $0.015 per kWh in every state with a few exceptions: the rate is $0.01 per kWh in Washington and Oregon and $0.012 per kWh in Virginia. There is a minimum monthly charge of $5.00 on the Premium plans.

How are you able to offer a free plan?

Our mission is to build a national full service clean energy company, providing customers with clean energy choices. We want everyone to use cleaner energy, but we don’t want cost to be a barrier for first-time customers to join. In the future, we plan to offer additional tools and renewable energy services to help customers save even more on their bills. Arcadia Power has raised venture funding from Box Group, Wonder Ventures, and many others which gives us the freedom to focus on building an outstanding experience rather than short-term profits.

How do I know I’m using clean energy?

The only way to use clean energy without producing it yourself is by buying renewable energy certificates (RECs) equal to your energy consumption. RECs were created to allow tracking renewable electricity – which is physically impossible – from the source (e.g. wind turbine, solar farm) to the end user (you). A REC is a claim on the social, environmental, and other non-power related attributes of electricity produced by renewable sources. Watch a video about RECs

Arcadia Power makes buying RECs that match your exact usage easy and affordable, making the choice simple. We provide you with a monthly statement and certificate for the number of RECs you’ve purchased.

What impact am I making?

Every month, your home uses a mix of energy that includes fossil fuels from your electricity supplier or local utility. When you join Arcadia Power you use your monthly energy bill to vote for renewable energy - and become one more household driving the demand for a cleaner energy future.

If you're into numbers, there are a couple ways to look at it. The utility sector in the US uses more water than any other (more than agriculture) and creates more CO2 emissions than any other (more than transportation). Producing the average home's electricity requires over 275,000 gallons of water and produces over 14,500 pounds of CO2 , every year (source: EPA). With clean energy, those numbers go to zero. You can track your detailed impact every month in our customer dashboard.

What if I have solar panels?

No problem! Arcadia Power has lots of customers with solar panels. We simply bridge the gap by buying renewable energy certificates to match your net usage from the grid. For example, if your solar panels cover 75% of your electricity use, Arcadia Power will match the remaining 25% with Wind Energy RECs.

What changes when I sign up?

To simplify things, Arcadia Power pays your local utility for your electricity charges and you get a single consolidated bill from Arcadia Power. If you would prefer not to have a consolidated bill, we can always bill you separately through our Evergreen Plan. Please give us a call at (866) 526-0083 and ask about the Evergreen Plan if you’d like to continue receiving your local power bill.
